Waist To Hip Ratio Calculator
Upper body or abdominal obesity increases your health risk, especially your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. To calculate your waist measurement, measure your waist at the narrowest part using a tape measure*. To calculate your hip area, measure your hips across the pubic area and at the largest protrusion of the gluteals (where your butt sticks out).
*Note: Waist circumference is a reliable and easily measured indicator of abdominal obesity. Waist measurements of over 40 inches (102 cm) in men and 35 inches (89 cm) in women indicate abdominal obesity.
How It Works
Waist to Hip Ratio is calculated as follows:
| Waist | = risk level |
| Hips |
Table 3: Waist-to-Hip Ratios and associated levels of health risks.
| Classification | Men | Women |
| High Risk | greater than 1.0 | greater than .85 |
| Moderately high risk | 0.90 - 1.0 | 0.8 - 0.85 |
| Lower risk | less than 0.90 | less than 0.80 |
