MFH Ambassador Karen Walters-Edgar
Name: Karen Walters-Edgar
Age: 55
Home: Beautiful Victoria, BC
Profession: Work at the Greater Victoria School Board. I also work very hard trying to keep track of my world travelling husband (in Spain, right).
My personal motto: To not exercise would be like not brushing your teeth! Yuck!
My Story: I grew up with a father who was a superb athlete–one of those rare people who excelled at whatever sport he tried. Needless to say, exercise has been imprinted on me from a very early age. I have been a runner for decades (well, more like a “plodder”); have been involved with Jazzercise for over 30 years as a participant and also during that time was an instructor for 7 years; I currently swim once a week, and also do yoga in addition to time spent at the gym. I love to go for long walks/hikes with my husband when he’s home–there’s something about being out in nature that really clears your mind and puts things in perspective.
How I met Karen: I first heard about Karen’s programs through our school district where she teaches workshops. Everything she said about fitness and nutrition resonated with me and I joined her Lift n Lose in-gym program. Strength training was something I’d never tried before so I thought I’d give it a go and loved it! It seemed to be the missing piece of the puzzle to my fitness regimen. Since then I’ve never looked back. I love going to the gym and squats have become my new best friend!
Through Karen’s workshops I also came to know another wonderful fitness guru, Dr. Cory Holly. I completed his program and am now a Certified Sports Nutrition Advisor. I am a voracious reader of all things relating to health, fitness and overall wellness and love nothing more than to pass along what I have learned. It’s hard not to want to help people who may be struggling with unhealthy lifestyle choices; I believe we should all do our part to pay it forward and help those in need.
About the HLP: It can assist anyone to build or improve upon optimal physical, spiritual and emotional health. The strategies that Karen uses demonstrate that sound nutrition, regular physical activity, as well as attention to your spiritual and emotional health, are the keys to longevity and quality of life. When you join the HL Program, there is a network of like-minded people, you never feel alone; there is always someone there to support you–let’s face it, life can get crazy and it’s nice to know where you can go for a healthy dose of encouragement! Someone has been where you are now and they can help you overcome many obstacles!
